Do you remember a while back when I was making the friendship triangles to exchange with my friends so I could make the Tree of Life quilt from Edyta Sitar's book (oh, I really love so many of the patterns in this book)? (Remember, I got that quilt all pieced and am hung up on getting the appliqué done...story of my life. Must. Get. Back. To. It!)
Well, my friend, Jill, made this quilt with her triangles from that exchange.
Isn't it just great?! I think she really did a fantastic job on it. I really love it.
Here's a close up shot of the quilting and some of the triangles. I think I recognize a few of my fabrics in there. How fun.
Jill said that when she finished it, her husband came home and stated that someone he works with is seriously ill. He said his office staff wants to have a fund raiser to help her with some of her medical expenses, and he asked if Jill could donate a quilt to be auctioned/raffled off. She said she had this one. She is struggling because she loves the quilt so much and, because it has fabrics from her friends, it's hard for her to give it up. But, being the really good person she is, she's giving it up for this purpose. Bravo, Jill.
I told her, "Don't worry. We can trade triangles again!" That will be fun!
I'm feeling pretty down right now, because one of my very best friends was just diagnosed with liver disease and needs a liver transplant. I am just beside myself over this. I think I need to make him a quilt. I was thinking I'd exchange some trianges and make him something out of Edyta Sitar's newest book (for which I'm going to a book signing this weekend....more aobut that next week) or out of her book that I own. So, I'd love to exchange some half-square triangle blocks with ya', Jill. And any others of you who want to exchange.
Well, now for something a little less depressing. How about a yummy recipe?
This is from my SIL, Linda. She often cooks with her grandson, Landon. After they cook, they taste test, of course. Linda says she writes in her cookbook next to the recipe what Landon says about the dish after tasting. For this one, he said, "Gooder than any kind. Even gooder than my birthday cake."
So, there you have it. If it's "gooder" than birthday cake, it must be pretty darn good.
I asked Linda for the name of the book that she got the recipe from so I could appropriately cite it. She told me this is from a recipe book from her grade school...you know the kind....the kind where the parents have to send in a recipe... Well, those are just about my favorite kind of cookbook, because people often submit their best recipes. So, there's another reason you'll probably like these.
Make some up this weekend. I may as well.
Enjoy!
JAM BARS
1/2 c. butter 1/4 c. sugar
2 egg yolks 1 1/2 c. flour
1/2 tsp salt 10 oz. jam
Cream butter with sugar until fluffy. Beat in yolks. Add flour and salt. Spread in 8x8 or 11x7 greased pan.
(this will be very soft and crumbly but packs down nicely into a crust)
Spread jam over. (I used a strawberry/blueberry/rhubarb jam)
TOPPING
2 egg whites
1/2 c. sugar
1 tsp vanilla
1/2 c. nuts
Beat the whites until stiff; add sugar and vanilla; spread over the jam. Sprinkle with finely chopped nuts (I used pecans)
Bake at 350 for 30 min.
My sister is helping me clean up my blog a bit and get things organized a bit more. What do you think of the changes? She is even working on a new masthead for me. I'll let you know when we get that done. Big thanks to Aunt Pea (ha ha--remember Aunt Bea??) for her help on this!
Until next time,
Mama Pea
