I hope you all had a lovely Easter. It's the time of year for renewal and hope. I like that about this time of year. One way I give myself hope these days is to actually finish projects--so they aren't sitting on my cutting table, nagging me. In that vein and given my desire to work on something very springy, I wrapped up my little sewing kit house. It turned out cute, I think! I am pretty happy with it. The pattern is in this book, Tilda's Toy Box. Most of the patterns in the book are for dolls and doll accessories--and the cutest house-shaped purse for carrying your doll in. This sewing kit is based on the house purse pattern, except this is smaller and--well, it's not a purse.

Here is a little closer up view of the front. You can click on the photo to make it bigger. Sorry the photo quality isn't great. Each time I upload a photo, Typepad keeps "resizing" it. I need to figure out what's going on. Thanks for our patience as I get back into blogging. Anyway, As I said before, this was a kit from Sunny Day Supply. It was fun to work with these cute fabrics. Everything was included in the kit except for a few little things, which I will mention. For example, I added the little pink button on the door for a door knob. The pattern didn't call for that, but I thought the door needed it. (I also gave the bird an eye and legs, which the pattern didn't call for.)

Here is the back of my house. I fussy cut the fabric a little for the back. The bunnies were so cute. Sunny Day Supply even included this adorable cat button that I sewed over the velcro closure. Sometimes I just love a good kit, because it comes with all the little pieces--the pieces that if I don't have them on hand will completely stop me from getting the project going--like velcro.

Here is the inside of my kit. All the accessories are things I added, as is the little kitty button on the scissor holder flap. I added that over the velcro there. I had a spare one, because Sunny Day supply sends you some cute little buttons with every order you make. Consequently, I have a little stash of cute buttons. More on that in a minute. My button stash was handy for this project. Cute little kitty to go with the other kitty button!
Brief Pattern Review and Tips:
The book is super cute. This project is very cute. The pattern is not very detailed, so you kind of need to have some skills already under your belt. The pattern refers you back to the house purse pattern a lot and to other sections of the book for details and suggestions. I always find that a little frustrating, mostly because my attention span just sucks these days. It's easy for me to get confused under these circumstances. Also, the applique on this project is small and a little challenging--at least for me. I am not that great at applique. And putting the fusible fleece under the appliques makes it a little more challenging. So, I would say this project probably requires some intermediate sewing skills.
As I said previously, I used by Annie's Soft 'n Stable for the house shapes. I like that it gives the project a little sturdiness without making it stiff or hard. And it's relatively easy to sew through.

One last word...Here is a package I received from Sunny Day Supply. Their packages always come wrapped in tissue paper, tied up with cute twine, and taped with adorable washi tape. And there's always a little envelope taped to it cute little buttons and other goodies. I love it. I freely admit to being a sucker for it. Details like this just make my day! Sometimes I can't even bear to unwrap it right away. I just have to enjoy it for a bit. Love it. I get great customer service from them, too. Very highly recommended online shop. You might want to check them out. They specialize in Japanese fabrics, and other totally cute and unique things. Love them.
Enjoy,
