Sample Gibson Block Mid Century Modern Bee

 

Hi Everyone!

Just a reminder that my palette of fabric is up for vote in the March Madness Mad for Solids Bracket competition over at Paint Brush Studio still today!

Here is my palette--

I am in a bee with some friends, and this is my month.  Here is what I'm asking my beemates to make.  I sent them some fabric from this palette so we could all work in the same fabric.  My sample block to them was as follows:

I asked my beemates to make a block full of half-square triangles laid out like this, but in any random color order they wanted.  They could use my inspiration photo as a guide or just make something up.  They can make it mostly blue, mostly tan/gray, or all mixed together like this.  I can't wait to see what the send me.  I'll sash the blocks with a dark gray to resemble the metal window frames from the photo.

Gibson Bundle for Paint Brush Studio March Madness

 Hi Everyone!

Well, today and tomorrow my bundle for Paint Brush Studios is up for vote!  You may recall they are having a March Madness event, with brackets and voting for different color palettes.  Read more about the event here.

Here is the palette I chose (the color numbers are listed below the photo).  As you may recall, I am calling this combination "Gibson."

Here is the backstory to my selection.  I think I already mentioned that a short while ago, my munchkin (she does not like to be called Sweet Pea anymore...what am I going to do??) tried out for a position in one of the workshop (nonperforming) bands in the Kalamazoo Academy of Rock.  Super exciting day.

The Kalamazoo Academy of Rock is housed in a building that used to be the Gibson guitar factory.  Many famous people have used Gibson guitars.  Perhaps the most notable one is Carlos Santana. 

This old building is a pretty neat historic site in Kalamazoo.  The Kalamazoo Academy of Rock is up there on the second floor to the left, where those turquoise and white windows are.

 

When we walked in, I saw those windows from inside.  They are right behind where the band plays.  They are awesome.  I loved them.  I was inspired by them!  I selected my palette based on them and hope to make a quilt based on them.  More on that, as well as a little more about the building, later.

Christmas Flutter emag

Hi Everyone!

I didn't think I'd have a post for you today, but....SURPRISE!

Check his out!  Amanda Herring, The Quilted Fish, has published a new e-magazine.  It's full of wonderful Christmas inspiration.  You'll want to check it out.  (It's FREE, by the way!)  The team did a really nice job with all their projects!

Amanada challenged all of us design team members to come up with a project for the Christmas emag using her her new Flutter fabric.  There are some really cute projects in there!  See if you can find mine.  :-)  I have two.  (Hint, look inside the front few pages....you'll see the design team members and a list of who made what.)

Now you know some of the deadline sewing I said I was working on and couldn't show you (this and the pillow).  :-)

I probably won't have time to write tutorials for these projects before the holidays, but I'll write about them a bit next week.  If there's enough interest, I may go ahead and write the tutorials later so you can save them for next year.

I have to say, I really love Flutter.  It's about my fave right now!  I hope you enjoy this emag and all the fun inspiration inside!

Cupcakes, anyone?

Okay....Typepad did it again.  Lost my post again!  At least this time I was only partially through it! Gonna try again!

I have a confession.....I haven't had much sewing time lately.  You may have already guessed that.  What little time I have had, I've been working on some projects for The Quilted Fish.  I can't show them yet.  But I'm really excited about some stuff with her.  I can't wait to show you.  But it will have to wait a bit more.  Patience, my precious.

So, in the meantime, I may need to have a couple of "non-quilty" posts.  Can you bear with me through those?  I'm hoping that you may still find some inspiration in the posts....

I'd like to share a couple of fun things with you from my trip to Florida.

While I was in Fort Myers, I went shopping one day with my mom, dad, and Sweet Pea.  I went shopping for a dress for the gala I went to, and I bought the dress I was wearing in this blog post.  After a full day of shopping, Sweet Pea had asked if she could get some ice cream.  We saw a sandwich board on the sidewalk that said "ice cream" and was pointing down this little sidewalk.  We walked down that sidewalk and found this adorable shop.

Check out these wonderful looking cupcakes!  The vanilla ones look so pretty, don't they?!  I love turquoise.

Mmmmm....chocolate and peanutbutter (said like Homer Simpson saying, "mmmmm.....beer").  They had a peanutbutter cup in the middle!  Honest!

So many good choices!  Cupcakes sure are the rage these days!  My dad was entranced.  We brought 4 cupcakes home for dessert.  The owner went in the back and found us some more Caramel Mudslides. It's no wonder I've gained back some of the weight I had lost.  :-(  Gotta get back on the diet.

They did have ice cream, too.  Really good ice cream!  I tried to get a nice photo of Sweet Pea, but she was not very cooperative.

The whole shop was adorable.  Don't you love the turquoise walls and the polka dots on the menu?  I really loved this light fixture over the cupcakes.  I wish you could see the furniture they had.  The chairs were these really cute clear plastic, modern-looking chairs.  And the tables were stainless steel.  My dad was talking to the gal behind the counter.  She was one of the owners.  She told us they had only been open TWO days!  Wow!  I hope they make a great go of it!

They had some cute little serving stuff for sale, too.  I loved this platter.  Don't you love that saying?!  (If you can't read it it says, "My age?  If I was wine, you couldn't afford me.")

And how about this one?  I sort of wish I had bought these.  They would be fun for serving at parties.  (This one says, "To enjoy the flavor of life, take big bites!")

And how about these cute, cute, cute towels?  That should give you some inspiration right there!

This was a fun day in so many ways.  Some good, quality family time, a new dress, and something yummy for the tummy.  I am missing my mom and dad as I write this.

Anyway, if you are ever in Fort Myers, you should visit this cute little shop.  It's called Grace and Shelly's Cupcakes.  (Click the link for locations and information about the shop.)  Stop in and show them some love.  You won't be sorry.  Both the ice cream and the cupcakes are AWESOME!

Lavender Sachets - the purl bee

Hi Everyone!

Sorry I've been so absent! Between traveling, being in meetings, finishing up the last week of classes, preparing for finals week, grading, and finishing up some sewing deadlines, I've been dying here. So, thanks for coming back to visit even though I've been gone and haven't gotten caught up with your blogs, too.

I have tons to post and share, but little time to sit down and organize photos. Soon!

In the meantime, check out this cute project and tutorial for lavender sachets. There are some links to some good resources, too. I have an idea for what I want to do this this.... I think I will try some. Love it. I love lavender, anyway!

Talk to you again soon! It may be spotty again for the rest of the week...finals week! (Yes, it will slow down a little after that, but not too much. I still have a lot going on, both personally and at work. Contrary to what a lot of people think, even though professors are not on contract after finals week and aren't getting paid, there are still graduate students who need help with theses and dissertations, research often keeps going, and there is much going on with the opening of a new autism center in town and the autism legislation. So, most of us work a lot during the summer uncompensated. This summer, I see myself working for free for a large chunk of it. For me, it's a trade off for the flexibility my job provides during the academic year.)
