Recently, I had the opportunity to review a new pattern by Larissa Holland of mmmcrafts. (If you have never checked out her blog, you should. I love everything she does.) When she offered me this opportunity, I completely jumped all over it. I love reviewing patterns for Larissa, because she writes her patterns so clearly. They are a joy to review.
This one is called Early Bird/Night Owl. You'll see why.
Here is the front of the pillow. See the Early Bird? Early Bird even has a worm in his pocket! The worm comes out!
Flip the bird bottom to top, and now you have Night Owl, complete with his pocket watch. See how his eyebrows are the feet for early bird? And how his pom pom toes are the bird's little tuft on the top of his head?
I worked this up when I was on retreat a while back, and my daughter asked me if I was bringing her any presents from my travels. I told her I was making her something, and when I got home and presented this to her, she flipped out. She loves it and keeps it on her bed. If you want to make a tween (or yourself) super happy, this is your answer!
This pattern is extremely clear and well written. There are lots of steps, and so I give it an intermediate rating. But each step is so clearly written and fun, you won't have trouble with any of the steps. Larissa has expertly written all of the placement instructions for the eyes, etc. Her placement markings make it so easy, you'll be able to get everything in the right place with no problem. I found every step fun, because the project just came together more and more with each step. Placing and sewing all the trims and details was just plain fun. It made me smile and giggle. Trust me, it's a real joy and very fun to make this. Did I say fun enough here? I mean it...this is just FUN to make!
You can get the Early Bird/Night Owl pattern here on etsy. She only asks $10 for this amazing pattern. I think that's cheap for all you get...pattern, instructions, clear marking diagrams, resources and links to additional information. Plus, you get a reversible pillow out of it! Larissa, you are amazing, and I bow to you in your creativity and expertise in pattern design and writing.
Oh, and she was sweet enough to send me the fabrics and trims to work with on this. I love her selections of color and pattern. I just love her style.
I told her that this project requires so many little pieces of trim, etc., that a kit would be really valuable to people. But she doesn't have the capacity to offer kits. If you know someone who does, this would be a great opportunity!
Hope this pattern review is helpful. I cannot rate the quality of this pattern high enough.
Bye for now!

*Full Disclosure: Larissa provided me with a free copy of the pattern to try and the materials to make the bird/owl. But my thoughts are my own. This review is not solicited by Larissa. I was under no obligation to make a public review of her pattern. She only asked me to give her my personal feedback, which I did. I wanted to share this with you, because I think the pattern is so good!
So super cute. I am definitely going to purchase this pattern.
