You may remember a while back that I won this jelly roll from Fat Quaterly. (Thank you again, Fat Quarterly!)
As I said back then, I am going to make their quilt they are doing for their quilt along, and I'll donate it to the Kalamazoo Autism Center.
I ordered some Kona cotton solids to go in the center of each block. I couldn't decide which charm pack to get, so I bought one of each (typical).
I started cutting all the pieces out this past week. I thought I'd use the solid for the square center, and the print fabric for the "logs" that go around each center.
Here's my dilemma, and I could use your input. I have a few more of these to cut, and that will be 20 printed strips from the jelly roll. I need to cut up 40 strips from the jelly roll. There are 40 in the jelly roll, but I think the color way of the other 20 don't match up so well to these.
See, the others have a lot of red and black in them, and I'm not sure how they coordinate. They are the same pattern, but different colors. (Although in this photo, it doesn't seem to look too bad.)
But, here's what I'm thinking...What if for the other 20 sets of blocks, I do the solid on the outside and the same prints that I already have cut on the insides? I have enough centers cut already to do the insides. I would just have to go find some yardage (or jelly rolls) of the Kona cotton to match. I did find some jelly rolls online. I'm thinking that would be less "busy." I could alternate a print-on-the-outside block with a print-on-the-inside block, and that might look pretty good. What do you think? (If this isn't making sense, maybe if you click here to see some examples of finished tops, this will make more sense.)
What do you think? Should I just use all the strips in my jelly roll, or should I go on a Kona hunt? Thanks for your thoughts. I hope to start assembling these this weekend. Should go together pretty fast.
Have a great weekend!
Until next time,
Mama Pea
I always thought that the purpose of a jelly roll was that they all coordinated?
I would stick with the jelly roll. The quilt will end up looking a bit scrappier than maybe you intended but I do think those fabrics go together. Just think of them in terms of darks, mediums and lights rather than separate fabrics. That might make life a bit easier for you.

I think the reds and blacks look jarringly different. I vote for your option of finding other fabric. And while you're at it, you could find more Kona fabric to match the reds and blacks - that would be a striking quilt, wouldn't it?!

I kind of like the mix of the jelly roll and the Kona solids. Go for it!

Once again, you have the red/black kitchen combo. You'd better start making some chair pads. I like your idea of solid center/print center. The red blacks look too off from the others. And again-kitchen? trivets? Did you get one of mom's kitchen fridge magnetic scissors holder? If not, get pattern and make one red/black.

I support your instincts, the black stuff seems severe in this mix

I wouldn't have thought the blacks and reds go in this jelly roll. I like your first choice. I would go on a Kona hunt.

I'm catching up on your blog and I am so glad to see what you're doing with the jelly roll that you won from Fat Quarterly! Your blocks look great, and the fact that you are donating it makes it even more special.
